Header work
Okay, I took some of your input and played around with Photoshop today. That's a new header since yesterday. (While I was at it, I created a new header for Sr. Julia's blog, too).
Here are some other options for this blog header, all variations on the same theme. (I am nowhere near as photogenic as Sr. Julia, so don't expect my face on a header anytime soon.)

I prefer the first one. =)
The first one - the blue - has a gravitas to it that I like. On the other hand, that may be what you're trying to avoid. Either are really good, in any case.
I think I'm inclined toward the blue for a couple of different reasons. By the way, you are photogenic, too :)
I'll pick the blue.
While I like the gold better, the blue one works better with the white background of the blog; so, I'll have to say the blue one.
Definitely the blue one. It stands out much better on the page. I would suggest taking the shadow off the "Whatever's on my mind." to make that more readable as well.

I do like the gold one, but the blue one I think matches better (same color as the links).
Decreased font size, please. We like to see more content quickly--and yes, navy blue preferable.
RE: decreased size, the header is the same size as before! (I didn't want to mess around with preset margins.) But I'm glad you want to cut right to the chase of content!
So far, the blue is in the lead...
