God bless Sr. Julie for tackling, straight-on, the question in the back of your minds right now: What on earth is an appropriate gift (Christmas, birthday, whatever) for a nun?

The favorite nun gift is one that has been in our family for years. It is called a bandaid. It is actually a twenty dollar bill inside of a bandaid box, hence the term bandaid. The origin goes like this: one day while cleaning my daughter's room (during her early teen years), I came across an old bandaid box and threw it away. When the loss was discovered much to my chagrin and hers I secretly replaced the bill in a new box and have been doing so for over thirty years.
Mom, you forgot to mention that the original band-aid box was my secret hiding place for a crisp $20.
More appropriate gifts:
I was just thinking how nice it would be to receive gift certificates for air travel, to relieve my community of the expense involved at retreat time when we all go to the motherhouse. But not all communities have that expense. (We do!!!)
Sister, you ought to investigate whether you can accept the donation of airline miles. Some of us have more than we can use, or too few to use, but pooled they can do you some good! The nuns at Mississippi Abbey in Dubuque did this when they started an abbey in Norway (there's a air travel expense!).
