Did you vote today?

I can't believe it: New Orlean's high society organization "Friends of City Park" is now tied with the Father Harry Thompson Center for THIRD place in the Burger King contribution contest. Get your friends, relatives, neighbors, grandparents, to go to the "campaign" site and get those votes in for the one charity on the list that is addressing the needs of the most disadvantaged people in New Orleans--those hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina, especially the young people in desperate circumstances: The Father Harry Thompson Center.

For anonymoous. If your theory is correct, perhaps if the Friends of City Park are really Friendly, they will toss some of those votes in the Harry slot. spqr

I resent what you said about Friends of City Park being a high society organization. I'm a member and I'm cetainly not "high society". The great thing about City Park is that it's for everbody! On any given day you'll find people from all walks of life enjoying what it has to offer. People seem to think that parks magically appear. They don't. And right now City Park is fighting to come back with an extremely reduced staff and little funding. City government seems not inclined to step up funding because it wouldn't look good. I'm sure they're right. I know that the handicapped need help but so do ALL the children of New Orleans. If you've ever been there you would have to admit that most of its patrons are children, the elderly and working-class people. Kids from poor neighborhoods flock to City Park. My late husband played golf there because it was one of the few places in the city he could afford. City Park is for everybody. It's one of the few places is New Orleans where that is true. I can understand you wanting to support your cause but please don't mislead. Right now, all charitable organizations need money. The fight over dollars need not turn ugly.

Oh, goodness, ZuluQueen, I had no intention of being offensive or inflamatory. I was characterizing the organization not by its membership as much as by its more publicized events. I, too, enjoyed many happy hours in City Park as a child. Perhaps I let my concern for the Father Harry Thompson Center get away with me, but I still think that addressing the urgent needs of the most vulnerable is a high priority at this time.

The fight over dollars? I think not. Avid competition for a variety of just causes...it's just that Harry Thompson's cause at this time is deemed by many as most worthy.spqry

"high society" is not exactly insulting language.

While "high society" is not exactly insulting language, it is often used in a pejorative way to imply "snobbishness". Blue Blood.
