Here in New Orleans, we more aware of Lent than in other parts of the country. We start gearing up for Lent before the Christmas season is even officially over! Yes, it's King Cake Season from January 6 through Mardi Gras. And here in the Pauline bookstore, people have already started coming in to choose their Lenten spiritual reading. We still have a little over a month to prepare, but that is not very much time for getting information to schools and parishes about my NEW Way of the Cross book.
You may have already seen the data about the high percentage of baptized Catholics who leave the faith, but this break with the Church now occurs at or around age 13. Clearly, despite the great investment in religious education and sacramental prep, these very young Catholics have not developed a living relationship with Jesus. We can’t solve this massive problem through programs or sophisticated media projects. Kids need to know Jesus; know him as a real person, as someone who understands and cares about them and their problems. That's where my book comes in. It guides children along the Way of the Cross, engaging children’s imagination and participation as they “witness” the events of our Lord’s final hours on earth. This powerful book, one teaching Sister said, “is written the way that children think.”
Lent is the perfect time to foster in children a prayer life that will support them throughout their growing years, and into adulthood. What would it take to put a copy of The Stations of the Cross for Young Catholics in the hands of every child age nine and up in your parish or local Catholic school? Perhaps they just need to take a look at it; perhaps they will need financial help to make an unexpected, but very timely, purchase--something that groups like the Knights of Columbus might agree falls within their own mission.
