Read the Bible with Me! (Saturday May 22)

Subscribers will know that I am still working on the details of daily delivery. I think we are really close. Thanks for your patience, and Blessed Pentecost!!!!

But first, let us pray:

God of my fathers, Lord of mercy,
who have made all things by your word
and in your wisdom have created people
to rule this world that you have made,
and to render judgment in integrity of heart:
Give me Wisdom, the attendant at your throne,
and reject me not from among your children;
for I am your servant, the child of your handmaid,
a weak human being,
and lacking in comprehension of your Word and your will.

Send your Wisdom from the holy heavens,
from your glorious throne,
to be with me, to guide me,
to enlighten me, to lead me to you.
(Based on Wis 9)

Today's chapters are Job 31-33.

Job's self-defense before God continues. Here he reminds God that his uprightness was not merely a matter of external conduct: He refused to look at a woman with lust, or secretly rejoice when his enemies suffered; he clothed the needy, shared his food with the hungry and gave lodging to wayfarers.

Job was a man who lived according to the Sermon on the Mount centuries before Jesus preached it.  Which brings me back to the opening paragraph of the book:

The LORD said to the satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil.”

This is the uprightness that we need here and now, in our poor, proud, violent world.
