I just got back from two weeks in New Orleans (yay, family time!) but this time with a new computer to set up on top of all the usual "back to work" things. And (of course) other things always pop up to make it ever more interesting.
Such as: the (free) email service that has been delivering my blog posts to subscribers for the Bible reading program is going to end in July, so I have to find a new way to get the daily readings out. (At least I have a bit of time to work on that!)
I had so many other things to tell you, but that news has pretty much distracted me from everything else. Meanwhile, a mocktail recipe, tested during my visit home. This is adapted from foodie magazine Milk Street (my sister was a charter subscriber!); the recipe is in its turn an adaptation from a Georgian republic. Enjoy! (We did!)
Make a "heavy" simple syrup with ⅔ cup sugar and ½ cup water and a handful of star anise. Let the star anise mingle well with the syrup then remove them. Take this off the heat and add a fistful of tarragon (yes, that's right) and a good bit of lemon zest. Now blend this with a quarter cup of lemon juice. Strain it into a jar or measuring cup to chill a bit. To serve, pour a bit (1.5 oz?) over ice and top off with seltzer. If you can't find tarragon (on our second try, we went to three stores that did not have it), basil works really nicely!
