St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick is one of my favorite saints, really up there with St. Ignatius and St. John the Baptist. I think of Patrick as a Father of the Church, the St. Paul of Ireland. So to honor him on his feast day, here are a few special links to Ireland:
The Shrine of Our Lady of Knock (in County Mayo, where my Dad's forebears lived)
And if you haven't read them, "The Confessions of St. Patrick"

There are at least four St. Patrick's day parades in the New Orleans area; in at least one, participants throw, in addition to beads and plastic cups, a variety of vegetables including cabbages, carrots, garlic, and onions. I also caught ramen noodles and satsumas, and although I don't know what they have to do with St. Patrick, I was happy to have them (I steamed the cabbage with a little liquid crab boil, salt, and pepper, and had it with Randy's braised corned beef). This weekend is the Irish/Italian parade honoring both St. Patrick and St. Joseph. I think they throw vegetables, too. Also this weekend, many of the St. Joseph's Altars are open for viewing. Are there St. Joseph's Altars in Chigago? ---harv681
